The best of Sydney, Australia

Since my husband is Australian, we are lucky to be able to visit Australia often. We frequently visit Melbourne but this last trip in December 2018 we got to visit Sydney for a few days as well. I have put to together this guide with the help of some family and friends who are local to Sydney, for anybody traveling here that is looking for the best beaches in Sydney, the best places to eat in Bondi Beach and some go to sight seeing you won’t want to miss! Enjoy – Meg

Sydney

New South Whales, Australia

about

New south wales

State Capital

Sydney is the State Capital  of new south wales and is also the most populous city meaning it is crowded and has the most amount of people living here over anywhere else in Australia!

How big?

658 Suburbs

With a little over 5 Million people living in Sydney, that makes up 65% of the states population. The main city is about 25 kilometers (11 miles) with the greater region outside of that.

Drive to Melbourne?

how far is it?

You can hire a car and drive from Sydney to Melbourne in about 8 hours (Kinda like going from OC to San Fran) or you can fly there in just 1.5 hours

Famous for

Sydney is famous for it’s beautiful beaches, the Sydney opera house, and of course the famous Harbor bridge over the water! The city is busy, full of energy and has warm sunny weather most of the year. Avoid June and July as those months are rainy and cold.

STAY

MUST SEE

Bondi Beach is one of Australia’s most famous beaches. Known for it’s soft white sand, amazing surfing and 1000’s of tourists along side local “SidneySiders”. The crowd is health conscious, trendy yet laid back. There is plenty to do in this beach town, and you can’t leave Sydney without it!

best beaches

Sydney is home to many lovely beaches! Here are my top 3 favorites

(not including Bondi which is mentioned above)

The Food

Believe it or not, Australia is not all shrimp on the barbie and steaks on the grill. It is extremely multicultural in Sydney and the locals eat Thai food, Dim sum, and mediterranean along with some Aussie favorites too! Below i’ll list out our favorite places to eat when visiting along with some local favorites who frequent here often.

We always get a good laugh when we walk into a cafe, becuase Australia is full of coffee snobs! And by snobs, I mean they know their shit and they literally call our American coffee “piss water”. The word is still out weather the coffee is better in Melbourne or Sydney but in either event, most cafes will focus on the coffee more than the food. If you like strong coffee you are in luck. If you’re like me and like “piss water” be prepared to order a mug of hot water, a shot of espresso and say goodbye to your half and half creamer. They have never heard of it lol.
